Style Icon - James Franco

My published editorial - www.thestyleking.com

With an over whelming sense of passion and enthusiasm in what ever he does Franco is not only talented, insanely cool and as sharp as a dart but has forged a career that’s both rich and diverse.

At only 32 and his career in its infancy Franco is famed as a multi faceted actor full of natural charm, dedication, love and passion for his work and of course has been helped along the way by his spell binding sultry looks and his mesmerising gaze.

His roles have become legend, from blockbusters like The Spider-Man Trilogy, to more poetic roles of personal struggle like Milk, 127 Hours (for which he received an Academy Award nomination) and Howl.

Franco is more than a Hollywood success story – more like creative genius and wit. With an unstoppable thirst for knowledge, since 2008 he has graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Creative Writing, hopped over to New York to do Masters in Writing and Filmmaking and is now enrolled on a PHD at Yale whilst studying at The Rhode Island School of Design. Add producer, singers, author, poet and model to his CV and you have the man of the moment – Mr James Franco.

Proving he has box office appeal, acting ability and a strong academic aptitude, does Franco have what it takes to be labelled an Icon of Style? Of course he does!
He has a mysterious dark image, with the impression he was one of the cool kids at school; cheeky and a bit of bad ass. His style mirrors this image and is typically low key favouring the James Dean (for which he one a Golden Globe for playing) combo of fitted T’s, jeans and a relaxed leather jacket – a classic outfit staple for any mans wardrobe. He’s also one of the flawlessly lucky ones who look’s just as comfortable and collected in a suit as in anything else. Fundamentally Franco is a fan of formal wear, but making sure to adding to it a relaxed laid back twist.

Franco – the Hollywood heart throb, brimming with intelligence and a classic unbeatable style. But more than just an icon of style, he has become an inspirational icon of how to exploit your natural talents and improve on the rest…or at least of the rest of us, die trying.

Stylish Life - Francis Kurkdjian

 My published editorial - www.thestyleking.com

Francis Kurkdjian, the contemporary Parisian perfumer who has wowed us with his fresh and tantalising new scents and modern approach to perfumery has given us an exclusive incite into his Stylish Life while touring the launch of his new perfume Aqua Universalis forte. Quoted in saying he “was draw to fragrance because of a succession of failure and finally fragrance is the perfect fit.” it would seems he has a natural nose for mixing seductive scents.

He is also a traditionalist and purist when it comes to style and the way people should live their lives, believing style isn’t just something you wear or somewhere you go, but a way of living your life to the full. Dignity, culture, style and taste – with out all four you’ve got nothing.

“Every moment in your life should be connected to a great or little moment of joy – to be that is the definition of luxury. It isn’t just the expensive watch, hand bag, or what ever, because this is too materialistic. The 21st Century to me, is more about refinement and taste. I may be old fashion and old school. But this is what I love and this is what I believe in. You must have fun and feel wonderful doing it.”

In 2009 he opened his stand alone boutique on Paris’s Rue d’Alger and has a concession in Liberty, London finest niche luxury destination if you feel the need to add a touch of luxury and charm into your own lives this summer.

Your favourite city in the world? Paris – For work and pleasure. It’s my home and I have my friends there – I’m happiest anywhere with my friends. We are a very close tight knit group.

And the thing you must see/do when in that city? Where ever I have my friends with me is where I am having the time of my life – they make life worth living and my time spent anywhere enjoyable. Friends and strong personal relationships make a destination enjoyable.
charvet parisFavourite boutique? It would never be for a fragrance – I don’t by fragrance at all. But for fashion, I have two favourite brands and boutiques; for my high quality and luxurious shirts I go to Charvet – these would be my very formal shirts, or Dior. Then everything else comes from a tiny shop in Paris across the street from my boutique, Avedis on Rue Saint-Honore which only sells Italian designers which I love because of the slim streamlined tailoring – I’m very slim. They also have a tailoring department which is great. Much better than strolling into Abercrombie & Fitch…

Bergdorf_Goodman

Favourite department store? I’m not keen on department stores – they always seem busy and stressful in less you go very early in the morning, but if I had to pick it would be…
In London, it has to be Liberty.
In New York it’s Bergdorf Goodman – this is why we decided to open a franchise in Bergdorf because I’ve always been a Bergdorf shopper.
Concorde
Your favourite bar in the world, and the drink you would order there? I tend not to drink or social publicly any more, preferring intimate and personal, private socialising. If I have to, maybe some of the top hotels with there lobby or saloon bars but I much prefer home entertaining…I hate bars.

The place/location/person you feel most inspired for your work? It would have to be my entire family – they are my biggest inspiration. They are cool, fashionable and funky, all with great personalities and charm. You could write a book on them, about everything they did and went though. My father was a scientist and one of the first people in France to deal with computers in the late 1950’s and 60’s – the house was always full of the latest gadgets and electronics. My mother was very much into fashion and my Grandfather was a tailor and should have been on Savile Row so the family is a wonderful mix of crazy artistic flare, with other relatives having been successful musicians and technology. Perfect inspirational diversity.
Your ultimate car/favoured mode of transport. On the arm of my lover…otherwise I miss the glamour and romance of tradition travel; the 1930’s Atlantic cruise liners and the time and effort it took. I was lucky enough to fly on Concorde 15 years ago – it was very chic. But now, it’s all about low cost travelling and everything is about being cheap and quick. I miss elegance and the glamour of luxurious travel. The style and charm which now is gone.

Your travel essentials; I have a travelling out fit for the plane. I hate people who don’t arrive in style. I have to arrive in style, but I always travel comfortably and change on the plane. Cashmere sweatpants and beanie, a scarf to wrap round my neck to protect me in flight and my wallet and passport and I’m good to go!
audrey_hepburn

What inspires you in your work? My own failure

Favourite restaurant and the best dish to order there. I don’t go out – I cook and I love to cook. I naturally have to eat out for work, but when I can escape I cook, one of my loves is cooking and creating something beautiful and delicious. I love to stay at home and cook, because cooking is a way clearing my head from the day – the perfect stress relief.  You have to focus and concentrate, other wise you mess up.

Your own personal style icon? Now a-days – no one. There is a huge lack of style. Style isn’t the way you dress or act, but it is the way you live your life. It is a sense of being. All my icons are dead – great heroes from a time gone by. Audrey Hepburn and other great people from the 50’s and 60’s – manners, class, style and tastes. People full of post war glamour like Dior and Bulgari, or Liz Taylor and Richard Burton because they were so in love. People today can be cute, funny and good looking, but have know substance or depth.

Sultry Summer Scent

My published editorial - www.thestyleking.com

The enigmatic and charming French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian who is currently taking the world by storm has done it again, launching a new fragrance – Aqua Universalis forte.

Aqua Universalis - forte - Maison Francis KurkdjianWe are assured by Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris that the jump from eau de toilette (the only strength Aqua Universalis came in before) to parfum is no easy feat or decision to be taken lightly and only happens when the composition is considered so truly worthy of the time consuming and skilled process. So, in all honesty we are lucky the house deemed forte exquisite enough to make the cut, because quite frankly we can’t get enough of the stuff!

The notes of this newly concocted fragrance and fresh, smooth and perfectly seasonal with a strong Sicilian bergamot note, more green and brilliant than before. The other notes are an arousing mix of lily of the valley, seringa, Egyptian jasmine and Moroccan rose and bought to the fore by a masculine and earthy musky tone giving this scent a hidden depth to challenge the light summer florals.

The launch of this limited edition  forte is a result of the overwhelming popularity of  Aqua Universalis eau de toilette, an easily worn fresh daily scent with a captivating and pleasurable composition.

Aqua Universalis forte will be available in Liberty in early July.

Style Icon - George Lamb

My published editorial - www.thestyleking.com

The dapper silver fox of TV, George Lamb had to sneak his way onto our iconic best dressed list at some point and the sooner the better we’d say.

man of many talents, Mr Lamb has proven he has kinetic charm both on radio and television as a presenter of such hugely successful shows as; BBC Radio 6 Music and Big Brother’s Little Brother (BBLB) and has worked with industry greats like the DJ Marc Hughes.

Not only being able to seduce an audience of reality TV obsessed strangers and create the perfect party play list, George Lamb is of course one of London’s perfectly turned out men, proving that London men are some of the globes best dresses.

His dedication to menswear has led George Lamb to team up with Adrien Sauvage a must have designer who believes in bringing new life to the suit. Together they have created a new label A.Sauvage with Sauvage at the creative helm and Lamb acting the muse and face of the brand.

George Lamb has created a look and style of gentlemanly elegance, and always appears cultivated and perfectly turned out. It’s this sort of seamless attention to details that gives George his foppish charm. Obviously taking his daily dress seriously, he follows Hardy Amies mantra “A man should look as if he had bought his clothes with intelligence, put then on with care and then forgotten about them”. His uniformed look of slim fit tailoring to show off his lithe figure comprises of a suit often in a three piece navy mohair from A.Sauvage W1 and accessorised with coloured v neck sweaters, ties, tie clips and his signature silvery floppy mop which produce an end result so natural and compact it’s hard to imagine him decked out in any other way.

He favours A.Sauvage for suiting but isn’t afraid for fraternising with enemy brands, getting his shirts from Charvet in Paris and if he does feel the need to stray from his signature staples, only the best will do and roughs it in J Brand jeans, rolled up chinos and espadrilles.

His style is quirky and unique and he has created a look that defines him and puts him in a league of his own. Proving it does well to be clever with your style and image, follow trend to a point, but stay true to your own integral brand identity and remain confident in your individuality.

Style Icon - Kanye West

My published editorial - www.thestyleking.com

Kanye West. Lyrical genius, music producer, American Dream success story, style icon, and soon to be (or not, as the case may be) one of Central Saint Martin’s best – we salute you!

So far Mr West is our most contemporary  icon of style and his fast track to fashionable success has proved too great to ignore.

Starting off as a record producer and discovered by Jay-Z, Kanye started a music career all of his own which has seen him reach lofty highs. Collaborating with musical greats Alicia Keys, Ludacris and Janet Jackson, his five US number one albums all went platinum (receiving 14 Grammies in total) and he even founding his own record label GOOD Music with such artists on its books as John Legend.

It’s not just soulful gangster rap and electro pop that’s putting West on the map, and we shouldn’t dismiss Kanye West’s credibility as a true bastion of fashion because of his apparently rejected application to enrol on the prestigious Saint Martin’s MA course in fashion design.

His recent internship with Karl Largerfeld at Fendi and his strong presence on the front row of the world’s fashion shows has led to a fashion designing splurge. West has announced he is to stick with fashion, designing a collection of scarves inspired by his current album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in collaboration with the French design duo M/M.

His fascination with fashion has a deep rooted connection with the attention to detail he pays to his own image and style, which is nothing short of floorless. Kanye squarely has his feet in the two different camps; Modern American Dandy and cool kid, Casual (but never sloppy) Gangster Chic.

Not afraid of the finer fabrics and accessories of dressing like a gentleman, when Mr West wears a suit he’s rarely seen without a pocket square, neck tie or scarf and favours sharp crisp tailoring. He has also given new energy to the bow tie proving formal attire isn’t reserved for royalty or the stuffy establishment. Kanye, wouldn’t be Kanye without his modern twist on formal style – his signature eyewear. Whether it’s something more traditional with vintage flare, or his slatted plastic lenses he’s made face furniture his own.

On the other hand, he’s perfected the casual lounge wear favoured by R’n’B hip-hop moguls all over the globe. Sports jackets, varsity jackets, joggers, fur trim and jumped up high tops are a must!

What’s really key, of course is his self assured steely cool attitude and confidence whilst still being the upmost gentleman. Kanye has successfully conquered every challenge and career path he’s taken on and has proven to be the king of cool as well as a maverick of style.
